ANTI-STIGMA: DO YOU KNOW THE FACTS?

DO YOU KNOW THAT
--AN ESTIMATED 50 MILLION AMERICANS EXPERIENCE A MENTAL DISORDER IN ANY GIVEN YEAR?

--STIGMA IS NOT JUST THE USE OF THE WONG WORD OR ACTION?

--STIGMA IS ABOUT DISRESPECT, AND THAT STIGMA IS ABOUT THE USE OF NEGATIVE LABELS TO IDENTIFY A PERSON LIVING WITH MENTAL ILLNESS?

--IS A BARRIER AND DISCOURAGES INDIVIDUALS AND THEIR FAMILIES FROM GETTING THE HELP THEY NEED DUE TO THE FEAR OF BEING DISCRIMINATED AGAINST?

--MANY PEOPLE WOULD RATHER TELL EMPLOYERS THEY HAVE COMMITTED A PETTY CRIME AND WERE IN JAIL, THAN ADMIT TO BEING IN A PSYCHIATIC HOSPITAL?

--STIGMA RESULTS IN FEAR, MISTRUST, AND VIOLENCE AGAINST PEOPLE LIVING WITH MENATL ILLNESS?

--STIGMA RESULTS IN FAMILIES AND FRIENDS TURNING THEIR BACKS ON PEOPLE WITH MENTAL ILLNESS?

--STIGMA KEEPS PEOPLE FROM GETTING NEEDED MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES?

INCOMING MESSAGES!
Tell Congress to Fully Fund Special Education
For too long, Congress has failed to live up to its commitment to fund 40 percent of the cost of educating students with disabilities. In fact, the federal government currently funds only 17.2 percent of special education costs, forcing many schools to cut other programs in order to provide required special education services. Schools and the students they serve cannot afford to wait any longer for the relief they so desperately need.
Bipartisan legislation (H.R.82/S. 1159) has been introduced in both the House and Senate to put special education on the path to full funding by the year 2015. Urge Members of Congress to add their names as cosponsors on this important legislation.

Bipartisan Anti-Discrimination Bill Introduced in the House
Representatives Barney Frank (D-MA), Deborah Pryce (R-OH), Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), and Christopher Shays (R-CT) have reintroduced the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA — H.R. 2015. This important legislation would prohibit employment discrimination based on sexual orientation. Every year, qualified hard-working Americans are denied job opportunities while countless others live in fear of losing their jobs. ENDA will help ensure that individuals are judged in the workplace by their ability to perform the required job rather than by prejudice and discrimination.

New Horizons: Exploring the Solar System's Frontier

Over a year into its journey, the fastest spacecraft ever launched is on a trek to a place where no spacecraft has traveled before. New Horizons will reach distant Pluto in 2015. The first mission to Pluto will seek answers to longstanding questions about Pluto's surface, atmosphere, interior, and moons; a possible extended mission will explore an icy body of the Kuiper Belt. The science behind New Horizons, the development of the complex spacecraft and its instrument payload, and the mission's current status will be discussed by S. Alan Stern on June 14, 2007.
